What ranking in the top 3 could mean for your roofing business

What the Heatmap Actually Measures

A single "Google Maps rank" number is almost useless for a service business. Your rank changes based on where the searcher is standing — a Tampa roofer might rank #2 from their own office, #8 from Downtown Tampa, and #17 from Wesley Chapel. That's why Vantrex's heatmap runs a full grid scan instead of one query: it shows how you rank from every point in your service area, not just the point closest to your business address.

The tool above pulls live data from Google's own local search results across a 5×5 or 7×7 grid centered on your business, for the roofing keywords that matter most for your market. Each cell shows your position (1 through 20+, or "not in top 20") for that specific searcher location and keyword. Green means you're in the Local Pack. Yellow means you're close. Red means invisible.

How the Data Is Pulled

The heatmap uses geolocated Google Places / Maps API calls for each cell in the grid. For a 5×5 grid, that's 25 discrete rank queries per keyword. For a business monitoring 5 target keywords, one scan produces 125 data points. The scan takes 20 to 60 seconds depending on grid size and keyword count. Results are point-in-time — ranks can shift within hours, so a single scan is a snapshot, not a trend line.

How to Interpret Your Results

Green cells (rank 1–3): you're in the Local Pack for that searcher location. Local Pack positions capture the majority of clicks on local business queries — independent estimates range from 42% to 70%+ depending on query type (BrightLocal, Whitespark 2026). If most of your grid is green, you're winning the visible slots for the majority of homeowners searching from that area.

Yellow cells (rank 4–10): you're indexed and reasonably close, but under the Local Pack. Clicks drop sharply below position 3. These are the highest-leverage cells to focus on — they're closer to breakthrough than red cells.

Red cells (rank 11+ or not in top 20): functionally invisible for that searcher. Usually caused by proximity (a competitor much closer to that cell dominates), thin GBP signals, weak review count vs. competitors in that ZIP, or missing service-area coverage in your GBP configuration.

Patterns worth noticing: a "hotspot" of green surrounded by red usually means you rank well only near your address (proximity-driven). Uniform yellow across the grid usually means your GBP is solid but you're outmatched on reviews or citations. Uniform red for one keyword but green for others usually means missing service coverage in your GBP for that keyword's category.

Heatmap FAQ

Is the heatmap really free?

Yes. Free to run, no signup wall on the basic scan. We use it as an entry point to conversations with roofers — but you're welcome to run it and never talk to us.

How often should I re-run it?

Weekly if you're actively optimizing. Monthly for baseline monitoring. Right after any major GBP change (category swap, review-generation push, service update). Compare grids side-by-side to see whether the work is moving the needle.

Why do my competitors show green everywhere while I show red?

Usually one of three reasons: (1) they have significantly more reviews than you and Google is weighting that signal heavily in your market; (2) their GBP is meaningfully more complete (services, photos, posts) than yours; (3) they've been around long enough that Google trusts them more — a compounding advantage that costs time to close, not money. Our free 30-minute audit diagnoses which of these is the primary driver in your case.

What does "rank" actually mean here?

Your organic position in Google's local search results for that specific searcher location and keyword combination — treating the top 3 Local Pack results as positions 1 to 3, then continuing sequentially. Ads are excluded from the count.

Can I use this on a business that isn't mine?

Yes. All the data comes from Google's public search results. Roofers routinely run it on their top 3 known competitors to benchmark where the ranking bar actually is in their market.

What do I do with the results?

If mostly green: monitor and defend — keep review velocity up and GBP posts flowing. If mostly yellow: focus on review count and GBP completeness — you're one push away from Local Pack for many cells. If mostly red: fundamental GBP or citation work needed.
