Google Business Profile has no keyword field — and stuffing keywords into your business name gets your profile suspended. The 6 places keywords legitimately signal ranking, and how a roofer should use each without risking a suspension.
You cannot literally "add keywords" to your Google Business Profile — Google doesn’t have a keyword field, and stuffing keywords into your business name violates Google’s policies (and gets your profile suspended). But you can legitimately signal ranking keywords to Google through 6 places: (1) the primary and secondary categories, (2) service list with descriptions, (3) product listings, (4) GBP posts, (5) Q&A section, (6) reviews (customers naturally mention keywords when they leave reviews). Do these correctly and your GBP will rank for the keywords you actually want — without risking suspension.
Google Business Profile has never had a "keywords" field the way old-school directory listings did. That’s intentional. Google’s system figures out what queries your business is relevant for based on real signals — the category you selected, the services you list, the words customers use in reviews, the text on your website that Google associates with your GBP. Fake keyword-stuffing is what the old system rewarded. The new system rewards accurate representation of your business.
The result: the ways to "add keywords" that actually work are all legitimate signals, not gaming.
What to do: your primary category is your single most important keyword signal. For a roofer, it must be "Roofing Contractor" — not "Contractor" or "Home Improvement." Add every legitimate secondary category too: Metal Roofing Contractor, Commercial Roofing Contractor, Storm Damage Restoration Service, Gutter Contractor (if you offer it), Solar Panel Installation Service (if you offer it).
Top-3 roofers typically use 5–7 categories. Never add categories for services you don’t actually offer — Google detects this via review content and complaint patterns.
What to do: in your GBP dashboard, go to Services and add every service you actually offer. For each service, write a 100–200 word description that naturally includes the service name plus 1–2 related terms. Example for "Roof Replacement":
"Full residential roof replacement in West Palm Beach and surrounding South Florida. We specialize in asphalt shingle, metal, and tile roof replacements, with a focus on hurricane-code compliance and insurance-restoration work. Every replacement includes tear-off, deck inspection, ice-and-water shield, synthetic underlayment, and a 10-year workmanship warranty."
Notice the natural inclusion of "residential roof replacement," "asphalt shingle," "metal," "tile," "hurricane-code," "insurance-restoration," "workmanship warranty" — all real keywords, none stuffed.
What to do: GBP allows "Products" too, and roofers often skip this. Add your most common jobs as products: "Asphalt Shingle Roof Replacement," "Metal Standing-Seam Roof," "Roof Repair Service," "Free Roof Inspection." Each gets a description and (crucially) a photo. Google indexes these.
What to do: publish a GBP post at least once a week. Each post is a fresh piece of content Google indexes. Topics: recent completed jobs, storm-response reminders, seasonal advice ("hurricane season prep for South Florida roofs"), before/after photos, customer spotlights. Include naturally-worded keywords in the post body.
Freshness matters — a GBP with no posts in 6 months signals a stale listing.
What to do: the Q&A section on your GBP is public. Seed it with real questions your customers actually ask, and provide detailed answers as the business owner. Examples:
Anyone can ask a question on your GBP — if you don’t seed with your own questions and answers, someone else’s stray question becomes the first thing prospects see.
What to do: the words your customers naturally use in reviews become ranking signals. You cannot ask customers to include specific keywords (that’s incentivized/manipulated reviews and violates Google’s policies). But you can make it easy for customers to describe the service accurately:
Do not stuff keywords into your business name. "ABC Roofing Best Roof Repair Contractor West Palm Beach" is a policy violation. Even if you get away with it for a while, it will eventually trigger a suspension. See the GBP suspension guide.
